The Nightly Update, the Second Saturday Night

happy baby yaaaaay!!!

I'm happy to report that we had another great day today. Our favorite baby is back in a good mood after our first ever fantastic night. I hope she does the same for Jarod tonight; she basically slept through the night except for a brief wakeup when they came to do vitals sometime in the middle of the night, and then we had a bit of a messy morning at 6am or so. We seem to be having a lot more pooptastrophes now that she's taking in more formula. We've also seen an increase in incision drainage. Today the on call attending told me that part of it is likely liquefied fat, as they'd left a fair amount of fatty tissue in place to aid in healing. So that's gross yet fascinating.

We're just in a holding pattern with pain management and food intake. As she is more comfortable and is taking in more food, she's able to do more. With Jarod this evening, she sat up for a moment and was excited about it. Her head control isn't great due to her core strength being destroyed; one incision goes straight down from her belly button, so I'm sure that those muscles will take time to recover. But still, she is definitely getting stronger every day, and it is so good to see.

For tonight I am home with Zinashi and happy to be heading to my own bed for a full night's rest. While Elvie is sleeping much better, and our bed by the window is a quiet spot, it's still not home, and Elvie is a bed hog besides. It will be nice to stretch out next to my other bed hog and know that I have plenty of room to move her over when I need to. I know she has needed me here, and I'm trying to make this one night and most of tomorrow count, to hold her over until we can all be home together.

  1. My new favorite word is "pooptastrophe." I provide care for a 1yo, so it's going to get a lot of mileage.
Glad, glad, glad to see the animation return to Elvie's face! Thinking of Zinashi, too. Every day is closer to the family being in one place, but I know that is hard for a little lady to fathom.

  2. YAY!!! It's amazing how much quieter the hospital is on weekends! Lots of healing to go, but these are huge strides! Hoping you got some great rest and quality family time!
