At long last, nothing but good news to share. We had an exceptional day here at the hospital. The occurrences of Sunday night and Monday set us back a little in terms of when we might be able to take Elvie home, but I can hardly complain after a day like today. She was so much more herself, and it was clear that putting the catheter back in and having some extra fluids was just what she needed. She has been in a good mood all day, and I've seen her smile, laugh, clap, and wave return. It is so good to see her so much happier and more comfortable. She also played quite a bit, in between napping to recover from all the ridiculousness of her bumpy start to the week.
My favorite part of today was that Elvie did not have any extra little procedures done. No blood draws, no ultrasounds, no exams by twelve different people. It was a relaxing day. While Elvie was sleeping, I took some time to just read some things I had bookmarked on the internet, and it was exactly what I needed. There were plenty of things I could have accomplished, but there are always plenty of things I can accomplish, and not many quiet days that I can spend a little time reading. So I took my opportunity while I had it, and tomorrow it will be back to the grind of fitting in work and email between whatever Elvie needs.
Zinashi really wants Elvie to get well enough to go home, and I hate that they see so little of one another right now. We are hoping that tomorrow is the magic day that we move not only from our tiny spot by the door to a window spot, but that we also get to get settled in a bed instead of a crib. At home, Elvie sleeps in a crib at night, but it is right next to our bed, and the mattresses are at the same level, so she can look over and see me anytime. In the hospital, the chair is significantly lower than the crib, so it's been a challenge to reassure her at night. I think we'll both sleep better once we're co-sleeping, and I'm so glad that this hospital allows for that. It will also allow Zinashi a little more space to hang out with Elvie, and more space also means that it will be easier for her to stay longer without driving anyone nuts.
For now, though, I will settle into my chair bed once again, and hope that Elvie sleeps just as well tonight as she did last night. That would truly be a gift.

Best big sister ever. Seriously.

In case you were wondering, this is my chair bed, wedged between Elvie's crib and the sink. It's super convenient for brushing my teeth. Here's hoping I'll have just one more night in this spot.

Glad to read Elvie is doing so much better! Hope you get to go home soon!
ReplyDelete"It's super convenient for brushing my teeth." So glad to see you still have a sense of humor throughout this all! Also, so, so, so glad to read about a good day for all of you!
ReplyDeleteYay!! And yes, if there was a Nobel Prize for big sisters, Zinashi would have it in the bag.
ReplyDeleteHooray! So glad to hear Elvie was smiling and laughing again. Here's hoping she has another good day today (and that you get to move to a better setup). -Emily
