It occurred to me last night, after our first official day of our homeschool year was over, that it's a fantastic tradition to take a photo of kids on the first day of school each year, and I had totally flubbed it. Except I didn't, of course, because I am always taking pictures of the kids with my phone. I think this will work nicely for a "first day of first grade" photo, don't you?
We are easing into our schoolwork and school day schedule. I really like the direction we're heading this year, and the main challenge thus far is getting Zinashi used to the structure. This is actually our biggest task this year; I know she is capable of learning all she needs to learn, and the curriculum is a good fit for her. So we will work on academics, but we will work harder on task completion and focusing, on doing what is asked without refusing or asking why.
While I would have loved it if it had been possible for Zinashi to go to the little school we visited this year, I also am grateful for the opportunity to teach her at home. It is a gift to have this additional year to help her learn all sorts of skills as we move through each school day and through the school year as a whole. I am still hopeful that we will be able to send her to school next year, but for now, this is good. It's really, really good.
